To some, the name given to Holy Thursday, Maundy Thursday, is an odd name. It is odd… What does it have to do with Jesus? Well, turns out that maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, where we get the word “mandate”, a word that’s more familiar to us. Especially as is familiar to rules or laws. The mandate, or rule, actually, “command”, is Jesus’ command that His followers love one another
Each and everyone of us will die…… some of us will be tortured, I am speaking internationally at the moment. For us Christians in the west, our cross to bear will be the experience of the uncomfortable situation of not being popular with our friends and peers. Chances are, you will not be nominated as prom King or Queen. One day it will change I promise, for now, it’s just uncomfortable.
Many, if not most, of us have heard of the mythical Phoenix. A marvelous bird that would burst into fire and flames at the end of its life, to be reborn again from its ashes. I am sure we also have some knowledge of the reincarnation beliefs taught in the Hindu and Buddhist religions: The life cycle of birth, death and rebirth, ever continuing until a soul somehow earns or discovers the way out through some form of enlightenment.
